ATLANTIS

Emerging Projects 2002: Success Stories updates

The emerging projects in the Atlantis West Coast area north of Cape Town has united under the Blaauwberg After School Forum (BAF). Launched on May 18, 2002, the forum has 10 project members. The successes of the following emerging projects are briefly documented below:

Name of after school project:

SUMMER PLACE

Venue:

Hartebeeskraal Multipurpose Centre, Nottingham Street, Wesfleur, Atlantis, 7349

Manager: Josephine Koeberg

Assistant: Maud Steyn

Project Status:

This project has been registered as a place of care with the Department of Social Services. Presently there are 20 enrolled children.  Some great artwork has been produced at the project. The number of children at the project is steadily increasing.

Name of after school project:

KINDERKASTEEL [Children's Castle]

Venue:

Berzelia Primary School, Berzelia Street, Protea Park.

Manager: Nicoline Marais

Assistant: Eileen Smith & Portia Erasmus

Project Status:

Launched in January 2002, the project's application for registration as a place of care has been successful and the project is growing steadily.

Name of after school  project

EMMANUEL 

Venue:

21 Goudeveld Street, Sherwood Park, Atlantis, 7349

Manager:

Mary Tenggren

Project Status:

The project has started from Mary's home as the venue she had originally intended to start at is now under construction and therefore unsafe for children. She has thus not yet submitted her application for registration. She is presently using a room in her home to accommodate about 15 children. She is, however, in the process of seeking an alternative venue until the building is completed.

ATLANTIS ACTS YOUTH PROJECT

Venue:

Saxonsea Secondary Sschool, Hermes Avenue, Saxonsea, Atlantis, 7349

Manager:

Ellen Don

Project Status:

This project is still in its initial stages of development with needs assessments being done to finalise themes and programmes to be implemented. An application for registration has therefore not yet been submitted. This will happen once the project officially launches.

REYGERSDAL

Venue:

Reygersdal Primary School, Reygersdal Avenue, Reygersdal, Atlantis, 7349 

Manager:

Maureen Angelina Hoorn

Assistants:

Allison Jonkers, Melissa Jonkers

Project Status:

The project is a registered place of care. Maureen and her team have a good working relationship. Maureen is an ex-teacher, and utlised these skills in her daily work. The Reygersdal project offers free play, lifeskills workshops, educational outings, games and activities for mental and physical development, homework supervision, children's rights workshops, cultural and educational activities and leadership skills training.

The project has the full full support of the parents, staff and the community. It is evident that much development is taking place. To date, parents have indicated that they have seen changes in their children's behaviour. Teachers have also said that the children's capacities to concentrate in class are much higher and the children are more confident when presenting their work.

Project Status:

The project team has worked hard at making a success of the initiative. The school governing body has provided support in the form of supplying them with bread and peanut butter daily.

DISNEYLAND

Venue:

66 Bonaventura Avenue, Avondale, Atlantis

Manager:

Deborah Dampies

Project Status:

Deborah launched the Disney After School Care Project in January 2002. The project is now a registered place of care and this has enabled higher levels of sustainability and quality care for the children.

IKWEZILOKUSA

Manager:

Nomawethu Dibela

Mavis Mdludlu

Project Status:

The project team launched the after school care project in February 2002. The projects operates in the informal settlement of Witsands in Atlantis. They struggled to obtain a venue as the area is still very underdeveloped. Through the support from the community they finally obtained a venue at a church.

ILITHA

Venue:

29336 Dumani Avenue, Du Noon

Manager: 

Leaticia Nokuzola Mgadeni

Project Status:

The project launched at the end of February 2002. Presently, Laeticia is operating in the informal settlement of Du Noon, near Tableview. The nearest and the only school in the area does not space for the project as it caters for two different schools. While Laeticia is working under very challenging circumstances she needs support, particularly for suitable premises.
