Hewu region, Eastern Cape

Whittlesea is 30km south of Queenstown. The Hewu region includes Whittlesea, SADA and surrounds. The population of Whittlesea alone is 80,000.  In all the low-income communities there are no tarred roads, piped water to dwellings, nor flush toilets.

Where did it all start?

Roseline Tole, one of the first graduates of PASCaP's After School Development Practitioner Learning programme, was born in SADA and motivated for a similar programme for the region based on the critical lack of resources for children and youth. The first after school development learning programmes was launched in August 2001.

Development milestones of the 1st programme:

bullet

90 unemployed women and youth were enrolled on the first programme, Introduction to After School Child Development - a 95% pass rate was achieved

120 persons were enrolled on the 2nd programme, Foundation Course in Community Project Management - also with a 95% pass rate

bullet

63 persons enrolled for the 3rd programme, After School Development Practitioner Learning Programme where a 98% pass rate was achieved.

19 after school projects were initiated following the completion of the learning programmes. These projects united under the Hewu After School Care Organisation (HASCO).

The Qhayisa Active Learning Library was launched in March 2002 at the Masibulele College, now the district office of the Department of Education, in Whittlesea. The library houses a range of educational equipment and development materials for children and youth, and offers regular short training programmes for after school project workers. Examples of the training programmes that are offered are: computer training, sewing, fabric and glass painting, materials development, drama, craft work and environmental art.
