Environmental health is increasingly being recognised as critical in poverty intervention. PASCaP launched an urban regeneration pilot programme as a means of focusing community attention on the power of the environment in improving life quality. Development partners were selected: the New Crossroads After School Project and the Andile Primary School in New Crossroads, a township created during apartheid which very much bears the features of economic and spatial marginalisation reinforcing poverty, deprivation and hopelessness. The additional considerations which were taken into account were:
The aim of the project is to facilitate the creation of an aesthetic environmental green space which will promote education on the environment, encourage food security through food and herb gardens, and enhance safety, teamwork and community spirit as parents and children work together in building and maintaining the space. The project innovatively utilises the interconnectedness of the environment, social living and economic development within a poverty intervention strategy.
