Urban Regeneration Project

Environmental health is increasingly being recognised as critical in poverty intervention. PASCaP launched an urban regeneration pilot programme as a means of focusing community attention on the power of the environment in improving life quality. Development partners were selected: the New Crossroads After School Project and the Andile Primary School in New Crossroads, a township created during apartheid which very much bears the features of economic and spatial marginalisation reinforcing poverty, deprivation and hopelessness.

The additional considerations which were taken into account were:

bullet

high levels of crime

bullet

lack of green space (there is no play park in the whole of New Crossroads)

bullet

lack of recreation space for children and youth

bullet

lack of safe outdoor play areas

bullet

high levels of child abuse and neglect

bullet

car highjackings, robberies and murder is on the increase (a teacher at Andile Primary School was murdered at the school in 2001).

The aim of the project is to facilitate the creation of an aesthetic environmental green space which will promote education on the environment, encourage food security through food and herb gardens, and enhance safety, teamwork and community spirit as parents and children work together in building and maintaining the space.

The project innovatively utilises the interconnectedness of the environment, social living and economic development within a poverty intervention strategy.

Key Objectives:

bullet

The development of a safe recreational area

bullet

The development of an outdoor eco-classroom which will also serve as a community meeting area, training venue and exhibition space.

bullet

The development of local community skills in food and herb gardening and greening (so that they may apply these skills in encouraging similar development in surrounding areas).

bullet

Development of community awareness on environmental rights and responsibilities.
